  1. The Link Between Back Pain & Your Hips

When lower back discomfort shows up, it’s natural to assume the issue is coming from your back.

Sometimes it is… but often, the real source may actually be coming from the front of the hips.

Your hip flexors are the muscles that help you lift your knees and bend at the waist.

And for many active adults over 50, hours of daily sitting can keep these muscles in a shortened, tight position.

Over time, tight hip flexors can pull the pelvis slightly forward, which may increase stress on the lower back.

This can show up as stiffness, soreness, or nagging discomfort that doesn’t seem to fully go away.

That’s why stretching the back alone doesn’t always solve the problem.

The area that hurts isn’t always the area that needs attention.

From our experience working with adults over 50, movement is usually the missing link.

Walking, strength training, and simple mobility work can help improve hip flexibility and reduce unnecessary strain on the lower back.

Strengthening the glutes and core also helps support better posture, balance, and everyday movement.

👉 To help you understand this better, here’s a helpful video from physical therapists Bob and Brad that explains it clearly:
