  1. Diane Keaton’s Death Is a Reminder about Pneumonia

The recent death of movie star Diane Keaton, 79, from bacterial pneumonia shocked fans worldwide. For someone so vibrant and apparently healthy, it’s unsettling — but not rare. Pneumonia remains the eighth leading cause of death in the United States, claiming about 50,000 lives a year and hospitalizing more than a million adults.

Older adults, young children, smokers, and people with conditions like diabetes or heart disease are at higher risk. As we age, the immune system weakens — a process known as immunosenescence — making it harder to fight infections that start as colds or the flu and develop into pneumonia.

That’s why staying active is about more than strength or appearance. Exercise directly supports immune function. Studies show that individuals who exercise regularly tend to experience fewer colds, recover more quickly, and have stronger antibody responses to vaccines. Moderate aerobic and resistance exercise improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and helps immune cells detect and destroy viruses and bacteria more efficiently.

You don’t need to be an athlete. Walking 30 minutes a day, engaging in light strength training, and getting adequate sleep can make a significant difference. Vaccines against the flu, COVID-19, and pneumococcal bacteria remain essential as well.

Diane Keaton’s passing is a poignant reminder of life’s fragility, but we can transform it into a source of strength to stay resilient. By moving more, eating well, and keeping up with preventive care, we strengthen not only our bodies but the defenses that keep us alive.
