  1. DIABETES AWARENESS: Exercise Can Help You Avoid Serious Health Risks

Staying active isn’t just about losing weight or looking fit. It’s about protecting your health, maintaining your strength, and enjoying the activities you love for years to come.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, making it a great time to understand how regular exercise can support healthy blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, especially as we get older.

More than 40 million Americans have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, occurs when the body doesn’t use insulin effectively, causing blood sugar levels to rise. The risk increases with age, making healthy lifestyle habits particularly important after 50.

How Exercise Helps Manage Blood Sugar

Physical activity helps your muscles use glucose from your bloodstream for energy. It also improves insulin sensitivity, allowing your body to manage blood sugar more effectively.

For adults over 50, combining different types of exercise can offer important benefits:

    • Strength training: Helps maintain muscle mass, which naturally declines with age, while supporting better glucose use and everyday strength.
    • Aerobic exercise: Activities like walking, swimming, and cycling support heart health and improve endurance.
    • Balance and mobility exercises: Help improve stability, coordination, and confidence with everyday movements.

The American Diabetes Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, along with strength-training activities two to three times weekly.

Remember, you don’t have to start with intense workouts. Consistency and choosing activities appropriate for your fitness level are what matter.

Why Diabetes Is More Serious Than You May Think

Diabetes isn’t just about elevated blood sugar. Over time, poorly managed blood sugar can damage important organs and affect your ability to stay active and independent.

According to the CDC, people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop heart disease or experience a stroke compared with people without diabetes.

    Other potential complications include:

    • Vision problems: Damage to the blood vessels in the eyes can lead to vision loss.
    • Nerve damage: Can cause pain, numbness, or weakness, particularly in the feet and legs.
    • Kidney disease: Diabetes can damage the kidneys and affect their ability to filter waste.
    • Foot complications: Poor circulation and nerve damage can make wounds harder to heal and increase the risk of serious infections.
    • Reduced mobility: These complications can make walking, exercising, and enjoying everyday activities more challenging.

Your Health After 50 Deserves Attention

The good news? There are meaningful steps you can take to support your health.

Along with balanced nutrition, weight management, and regular medical checkups, making physical activity part of your routine can help you maintain strength, improve mobility, and support long-term health.

If you have diabetes or other health concerns, talk with your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine. Your exercise plan should match your health needs and abilities, particularly if you take medication that may cause low blood sugar.

And if you haven’t had a recent diabetes screening, ask your healthcare provider whether it’s time.
