  1. The Skinny on Moo

Curiosity has arisen in the studio recently regarding milk.  To drink or not to drink?  And if so, which?  We have found a personal favorite of both Lisa and I. It is called MooTopia and is sold exclusively through H.E.B.  It comes in both 2% and fat free varieties.  (Chocolate is also available for our chocolate lovers!)   What, you may ask, is so special about MooTopia?

MooTopia contains considerably more protein and less fat than other leading non-fat or fat free milks and is also lactose free.  Notice the calories, protein and fat contents for the non-fat, whole and 2% milk.

I researched our Mootopia product and found some additional on this delicious product:

In 2005, H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (H-E-B), based here on the Texas Gulf Coast introduced MooTopia, milk that features 60% less sugar, 35% more calcium, 75% more protein and 4g carbohydrates, per serving.

MooTopia is also lactose free, and it is substantially creamier and more flavorful than traditional milk, according to H-E-B. The company says taste tests show that MooTopia skim milk is creamier than traditional 2% milk, while MooTopia 2% is creamier than traditional whole milk.
H-E-B, along with partner Select Milk Producers Inc., Artesia, N.M., patented the process.

President of Select Milk Producers, Brad Bouma, is a fifth-generation dairy farmer from Plainview in the Texas Panhandle.  Bouma claims that through patented technology, Select has developed the means to create ‘designer milks.’ High quality milk fresh from the farm goes through several filtration processes separating the fat from the protein, from the sugars, from the calcium and other solids from the water. These then are recombined in different ratios to provide a different profile of milk.

Let’s compare some milk labels for whole, non-fat and 2% milk varieties.  You decide for yourself:

Standard Brand  2% Milk              Standard Non Fat Milk                Standard Brand Whole Milk               HEB Fat Free Mootopia

  2. Exercise For Water Retention

Fluid retention is a condition that is experienced both by men and women. The cause of bloating may be the result of diet, or may result from a medical condition.  Fluid retention occurs when water accumulates in the body.

Most fluid retention is mild and temporary. Often fluid retention is related to eating salty food. Swelling can occur after eating high sodium meals, such as: Chinese food, chips, deli meats, smoked fish, frozen entrees, canned soups or salad dressings. Eating a healthy diet low in fats and sodium helps to relieve water gain and keep blood pressure in check, according to the Mayo Clinic, which is important because water is used by the body to combat large amounts of salt.

Get  your circulation going with exercise!  Exercise can relieve the body of excess fluid and salt through sweating, increased breathing, and ultimately, increased urine flow.  One sure way to help reduce and relieve water retention is regular cardio exercise.  It opens up the blood vessels and gets oxygen as well as water moving rapidly throughout the body so it can be discarded and replaced. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to gain the benefits.  Moderate exercise on a regular basis can also help relieve many ailments in addition to water retention such as insomnia, back pain and lethargy.

Briskly walking for 30 minutes at a time a few times a week is an excellent way to keep water retention in check, even if the time is broken up in to smaller increments. Using elliptical machines, treadmills and exercise bikes are also effective in releasing excess water from the body, and they’re considered great ways to increase stamina and overall physical health.  If you have access to a swimming pool, or lake, take advantage of the opportunity to immerse yourself in water while you exercise.

Although exercise is an effective way to get rid of unwanted water retention, there are things that can be done in addition to exercise that can help reduce unwanted water.  Doctors agree that maintaining a healthy level of blood sugars at all times is another way to control water retention. This can be done simply by eating small, healthful meals often throughout the day.

Also, drink plenty of water. It may seem counterintuitive, but water flushes excess fluids and excess salt right out of your body .  If you are not getting enough fluid during exercise, your symptoms of water retention may actually worsen. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily and sip water before, during and after workout sessions.

Once you lose excess water weight, be sure to continue your good eating and exercising habits for long-lasting weight maintenance.

  3. Build a Home Gym

Must-Have Equipment for Your Dream Home Gym

What equipment do you imagine having in your home to exercise with? Which items would add the most challenge and variety to your workouts with your trainer?

One of our favorite organizations, IDEA’s members, authors, presenters and fitness professionals (at large) were surveyed and polled about equipment they couldn’t live without. Here, we present (in no particular order) some must-have pieces of equipment for your successful home gym.

    Dumbbells

Dumbbells are the workhorses of the fitness world. We believe they are destined to remain a fitness mainstay. If you don’t have a selection of dumbbells, it may be time to pick up a set. Compared with other pieces of equipment, dumbbells are fairly inexpensive offering a large variety of exercise possibilities. Dumbbells are also an easy way to track progress, by comparing your starting dumbbell weight with your current weight.

    Pull-Up Bar

Pull-ups can be daunting and scary and there are many ways to add a pulling component to your home gym. A pull-up bar, of some sort, takes up very little space, and without the pull-up bar, you’re missing out on two of the most important patterns: pulling and rowing. A pull-up bar also makes a great anchor point for any exercise bands you may already possess.

    Body Weight Leverage Training

Equipment like the TRX® Suspension Trainer™ might also take care of the need for a pull-up bar, at least in the beginning stages of building your home gym. The concept is simple: Attach the device to an anchor point like a tree branch or your pull-up bar and use gravity and your own body weight to get a challenging full-body workout.

“Suspension Training® can be a home gym owner’s dream come true. For under $200, this piece of equipment can be used for cardio, strength and flexibility. It doesn’t need much space, and when bagged and stowed, it takes less space than a pair of shoes.

    Sandbags

Sandbags aren’t just for protecting against rising waters. Sandbags offer trainers and their client’s tremendous versatility. “Sandbag training can be used for corrective exercises and for teaching people—in 30 seconds or less—to squat properly.

What should you look for in a sandbag? Consider vinyl options that are less abrasive to the skin and can be easily cleaned. Whether or not the manufacturer offers education could factor into your purchase.

    Balance Trainers

Balance trainers come in various forms—half-balls, balance and wobble boards, disks and sponge pads. We prefer the BOSU® Balance Trainer. This is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment at our training studio. This one product allows you to train with dynamic or static moves, standing, seated, kneeling, side-lying, prone or supine. Training three-dimensionally is of utmost importance when you are striving to instill better movement mechanics before adding load. With the Balance Trainer you have access to cardio, strength and core [training], as well as a comfortable, assisting platform for many stretches, and all the while you are improving balance and coordination. If we could have only one thing, it would be a Balance Trainer.

  4. Fall Fitness Guidelines

Fall is a time when LOTS of people are starting to make fitness goals and we want to make sure that you reach those goals.

If you follow these Fall Fitness Guidelines you will be well on your way to seeing serious results this season!

1: Moderate Aerobic exercise: The American College of Sports Medicine suggest all adults should engage in 30 to 45 minutes or more of moderately intense physical activity daily to maximize fitness gains and fat loss.

2: Concern for Muscle: According to the Mayo Clinic, if your aerobic workouts aren’t balanced by a proper dose of strength training, you’re missing out on a key component of overall health and fitness that will maximize fat loss, build bone density, improve posture, develop muscle tone and slow down the aging process.

3: Right Nutrition: Eat 5-6 small meals and snacks each day. Studies indicate that when people eat more regularly throughout the day, they are less likely to overeat or indulge in less-healthy choices.

4: Drink Water: Our body is 50-60 percent water, and when we are dehydrated, our body and its organs and systems don’t function at their optimal level. How Eight Glasses a Day can Keep the Fat Away

5: Practice the 80:20 rule. You can’t expect to be perfect for the rest of your life, and setting these types of high expectations will definitely set you up for failure and feelings of inadequacy. The 80:20 Diet Rule

6: Limit your alcohol intake: Alcohol poses a number of problems. It is high in calories and lacking in nutrient value. Is Alcohol Making Me Fat?

7: Increase your daily activity: Try to think of ways that you can be more active throughout your day without having to actually exercise. 200 Healthy Calories In/Out
8: Journal: Keep an activity and food log. Record your daily exercise and what and how much you eat. Food Journaling is Good For Your Health.
